Former USC running back coach accuses NCAA of defamation

College sports is filled with allegations of special treatment and monetary favors on behalf of players. When a university in Ohio or elsewhere comes under investigation under similar circumstances, those who coach the players may be the first ones questioned, and being the subject of such an investigation can be a daunting experience. A former running back coach at the University of Southern California has filed a defamation lawsuit against the NCAA after an investigation left him without a future in coaching.

The investigation began with former USC running back Reggie Bush after investigating officials allegedly learned that his family has received illicit benefits from numerous sources. While handing down severe punishments to the university, the NCAA committee also released statements claiming that Todd McNair, the running back coach, had engaged in unethical conduct. Following this report, the university chose not to renew his contract, and he claims that he has been unable to obtain a coaching position with any other program.

According to reports, McNair initially sought to appeal the decision, but he filed a lawsuit against the NCAA after it was rejected. In the lawsuit, he claims the committee conjured fake evidence to support its claims of unethical behavior. In a previous hearing in which the NCAA sought to have the lawsuit dismissed, a judge reportedly concluded that the methods used by investigators were excessive and that the committee showed sings of animosity toward the coach.

Even if the allegations against a person are false, such an investigation can do a significant amount of damage to his or her image. Those who are subjected to such treatment could consult with an attorney for advice on how to protect their reputation from unnecessary suffering. An attorney in Ohio can evaluate the client's situation and assist in pursuing the restitution to which he or she is entitled through a defamation claim against the party or parties deemed responsible.
