Former coach files defamation claim after being singled out

When allegations of wrong-doing arise, some may wish to escape the blame by pointing a finger at others. When individuals in Ohio and elsewhere feel they are being used as scapegoats, they may wish to protect their reputation, but they might be uncertain how to achieve this goal. A former college football coach has recently filed a defamation lawsuit against the school and a spokeswoman following a recent investigation into a drug arrest and kidnapping.

According to reports, the man was removed from his coaching position shortly after the news broke concerning two football players that were kidnapped and tortured. The kidnapping was reportedly an act of revenge in response to a drug crime that was committed by one of their team mates. A spokeswoman for the college released a statement concerning the player's arrest, and stated that the assistant coach coordinated efforts with the two players, who were later kidnapped, to raise money to pay the man's bond and secure his release form jail.

However, the former coach claims that he did not take part in, nor did he have knowledge of, fund raising of any kind. He also says that although he signed the bond for the man, several other coaches took part in the process and thanked him for his actions. However, once the investigation began, he was apparently singled out by the spokeswoman and accused of acting without approval from staff or administration. He asserts that his personal and professional reputation has suffered a great deal of damage as a result.

Individuals who are subjected to defamation of this nature may wish to protect themselves against such unfair treatment, but the process can be complex. When facing a similar situation, one could speak with an attorney for advice on how best to approach the situation. An attorney in Ohio can address a client's concerns and assist in protecting his or her reputation through the necessary channels.
