Beef Products Inc. files defamation lawsuit against ABC

While many businesses in Ohio and elsewhere might offer a variety of products, some make the majority of profit off one product alone. Whether it is sold directly to customers or supplied to other businesses for use, it might be instrumental in the overall success of the company. If this product comes under fire unjustly, a company could face significant financial losses and may seek to protect its future through a defamation lawsuit.

Beef Products Inc. (BPI) has filed a lawsuit against television broadcasting company ABC following a series of reports about a product called Lean Finely Textured Beef. This product was apparently used in up to 70 percent of ground beef according to the report, in which ABC referred to it as pink slime. Following the coverage, BPI claims to have lost a great deal of business, eventually leading to a downsize of the business and numerous layoffs.

BPI also asserts that the coverage may have led customers to believe the product was unsafe. Raising such concerns could do an untold amount of damage to any business. Although there may be nothing wrong with informing consumers of what is in the products they eat, leading them to believe a product is harmful, despite the facts, could ruin the reputation of a business altogether.

Overcoming the challenges of defamation alone can be a difficult task, especially with the fast spreading nature of news and social media. Those who are facing a similar situation could choose to speak with an experienced attorney for assistance in the process. An attorney in Ohio can assist a client in protecting the reputation of a business and safeguarding against future attacks.
