Art museum claims libel and slander have damaged business

Certain businesses in Ohio and elsewhere often rely on donations and investments to continue operations within a specific field. Owners and operators of similar ventures work hard on building a positive reputation, generally considering this aspect to be paramount to the success of a business. If subjected to libel and slander, securing future investments can become challenging, and the future of a business might subsequently be at risk.

An art museum in another state has recently filed a lawsuit against the county in which it is located, stating that it has lost donors and business opportunities following recent statements in relation to the use of funding. The owners of the museum assert that the former commissioner released false information, claiming the museum has spent as much as $20 million on exhibits when the actual amount is reportedly closer to $5 million. The owners also claim that the county was aware of the exact amount used for exhibits.

They also claim that certain individuals also released false statements in relation to the rating of the museum, claiming that it was as low as possible. According to the owners, misleading information was released to potential donors alleging that the museum was struggling financially. Such information may have driven many of them away from donating to, or investing in, the museum.

The damage to the reputation of a business through libel and slander can be devastating. Similar businesses who count on additional funding can struggle to survive under these circumstances. When falsely accused and/or attacked in such a way, an owner in Ohio could choose to speak with an attorney for advice on how to protect the current and future reputation of his or her business. If this requires legal action, an attorney can assist a client in filing a claim against the party deemed culpable.
