Revenge porn defamation is a fast-growing problem

When a person in Ohio wants to get even with someone, he or she may look for a way to hurt that person without doing physical harm. More frequently, people are turning to revenge porn as a way to lash out at someone with whom they are having a dispute. Revenge porn is when someone posts nude or sexually explicit pictures or videos of a person without the person knowing or giving permission. One woman reportedly suffered this type of defamation from a surprising source.

The woman, who was a police officer, reported that someone was allegedly able to access and download private pictures from her cellphone. Those pictures of the unclothed officer were then uploaded and posted on her own Instagram and Snapchat accounts. The victim also reported that another officer, a 24-year-old woman, had recently sent her messages implying that she needed to learn a lesson.

The victim said she and the other officer knew each other from work but were not necessarily friends. Nevertheless, she could not think of a reason why the other woman would do such a thing. In recent days, the victim said she and the accused woman had spoken casually, and nothing seemed amiss. Police say the woman has been on the force for less than a year.

The accused spent 72 hours in jail before being released on $5,000 bond. She is facing numerous charges. This type of defamation has grown in popularity over the past few years, leading many states, including Ohio, to consider passing laws to punish people who resort to revenge porn. Those who are victimized in this manner may benefit from an attorney whose focus is preserving people's online reputations.
